249635 Carla Hay Culture Mix Fresh 2026-08-21T22:58:38.000Z 2026-08-21 22:58:38 Haunting, absorbing, and occasionally funny, It Ends puts a creative spin on a horror story concept about people trapped in situation they can't seem to escape.
249629 Scott Collura IGN Movies Fresh 8/10 2026-08-21T22:13:17.000Z 2026-08-21 22:13:17 It Ends, the latest indie-horror-thriller-that-could, is both creepy and amusing thanks to its likable cast and filmmaker Alexander Ullom’s ability to exploit minimal resources to maximum effect.
249630 David Fear Rolling Stone Fresh 2026-08-21T21:59:12.000Z 2026-08-21 21:59:12 In a perfect world, Ullom’s extraordinary riff on fear, loathing, and postcollegiate rootlessness would reap the same reception and box-office returns as Obsession and Backrooms.
249631 Peter Travers The Travers Take Fresh 3.5/4 2026-08-21T21:44:22.000Z 2026-08-21 21:44:22 Here’s the one shining movie original you have to see right now. Alexander Ullom’s dazzling debut is a Gen Z scarefest that gets you going by going nowhere and that’s some kind of miracle.
248311 Owen Myers Guardian Fresh 4/5 2026-08-21T19:53:51.000Z 2026-08-21 19:53:51 If Sartre famously said that hell is other people, It Ends seems to suggest that they might be able to save us too.
248312 Reuben Baron Reactor Fresh 2026-08-21T19:12:58.000Z 2026-08-21 19:12:58 I’m not particularly wowed by it because it’s so simple and because I’ve seen similar things before—but if this is your first time with this kind of thing, it’s a ride worth taking.
248287 Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? Fresh 8/10 2026-08-21T14:44:03.000Z 2026-08-21 14:44:03 Regardless of whether they are correct, however, none of them regret their choice. And that’s truly all you can ask. Maybe this is a nightmare you must escape. Maybe it’s the escape you didn’t know you needed.

247440 Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Fresh 2026-08-21T14:09:53.000Z 2026-08-21 14:09:53 Some clever turns fuel the nightmarish road to nowhere in this unsettling dystopian thriller that subverts genre tropes and eschews jump scares in favor of deeper psychological terror.

247413 BJ Colangelo Slashfilm Fresh 8/10 2026-08-21T13:17:28.000Z 2026-08-21 13:17:28 "It Ends" has all the makings of a survival horror thriller. But when the drive continues on, and on, and on, Ullom's film reveals itself to be something far more interesting.
247414 Maitland McDonagh MaitlandOnMovies (Substack) Fresh 2026-08-21T12:33:50.000Z 2026-08-21 12:33:50 [S]ubverts the American road movie’s traditional promise of freedom. Whereas the highway in films usually suggests escape, self-invention or at least the possibility of elsewhere-ness, [this] offers ... a riposte to the mythology of American mobility.
247415 Karina Adelgaard Heaven of Horror Fresh 3/5 2026-08-21T08:19:49.000Z 2026-08-21 08:19:49 I enjoyed the pacing, the escalation and evolution of the plot, and how it’s character-driven. As always, you have to somehow root for these people. Otherwise, you won’t care what happens to them. Well, I rooted for all of them, which means...

247400 William Bibbiani TheWrap Fresh 2026-08-21T00:52:46.000Z 2026-08-21 00:52:46 It’s profoundly troubling and all the more powerful for its simplicity.
247388 Lindsey Bahr Associated Press Fresh 2.5/4 2026-08-20T20:59:38.000Z 2026-08-20 20:59:38 It’s a neat concept that wears a little thin after a while, but it’s a movie that shows promise not only in Ullom’s ability to create a sustained, ominous mood, but in his eye for casting a group of talented and essentially unknown actors.
247389 Andrea Chase Killer Movie Reviews Fresh 4/5 2026-08-20T20:50:57.000Z 2026-08-20 20:50:57 The premise is esoteric, but the execution is psychologically rich and compelling thanks to performances from the four leads that delve rich emotional depths and entirely recognizable human foibles.
246386 Alissa Wilkinson New York Times Fresh 2026-08-20T19:44:18.000Z 2026-08-20 19:44:18 It Ends, on the other hand, is about something less individually horrifying, more systemically ghastly: finally taking the on-ramp to adulthood, only to discover that what you’ve worked for your whole life, until now, is unblinking, unchanging monotony.
246376 Matt Goldberg Commentary Track (Ghost.io) Fresh 4/5 2026-08-20T17:54:12.000Z 2026-08-20 17:54:12 Alex Ullom takes a simple premise and pushes it to maximum effect in his captivating thriller.
246374 Michael Nordine Movie Brief Fresh 3/4 2026-08-20T17:10:27.000Z 2026-08-20 17:10:27 Forms a recursive loop alongside Exit 8 and Backrooms in its portrayal of a uniquely nightmarish dread: the growing awareness that the liminal space you’re in appears to go on forever with no offramp in sight.
246369 Ben Wasserman Film-Forward.com Fresh B 2026-08-20T14:52:20.000Z 2026-08-20 14:52:20 It Ends might not be a time loop movie in the traditional sense, but it succeeds in creating a metatextual angle to the question of what these kinds of traps mean within an existential nightmare.

246330 Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Fresh 3/4 2026-08-19T22:42:15.000Z 2026-08-19 22:42:15 It’s yet another example of a newcomer with a fresh voice and clear vision who’s steering horror films into exciting, existential directions.
244859 Robin Clifford Reeling Reviews Fresh B- 2026-08-19T18:38:36.000Z 2026-08-19 18:38:36 Being in a car, on an endless road driving days on end, never getting tired or hungry and never running out of gas. We should be hearing Rod Serling say, "You’ve entered the ‘Twilight Zone.’"
244860 Amy Nicholson Los Angeles Times Fresh 2026-08-19T18:23:12.000Z 2026-08-19 18:23:12 Bursting through the confinements of movie logic, "It Ends" untrains audiences out of their certainty that every crisis has a solution. Does it even matter what they do?

244822 Todd Gilchrist Fangoria Fresh 2026-08-19T16:25:47.000Z 2026-08-19 16:25:47 Ullom’s work follows in the footsteps of recent hits like Obsession and Backrooms by reminding audiences that horror movies don’t need a lot of money if their ideas are big enough.
244797 Joey Magidson Awards Radar Fresh 3/4 2026-08-19T06:12:43.000Z 2026-08-19 06:12:43 It Ends gets a lot of mileage out of an impossible premise.
244751 Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Fresh 3/4 2026-08-18T19:53:58.000Z 2026-08-18 19:53:58 The movie is narratively indeterminate by design. That may frustrate some and intrigue others. Either way, Ullom’s filmmaking is confident, and his premise is admirably obscure, making this, and whatever he does next, worth seeking out.

With four characters and one location, It Ends terrifies, shocks and inspires despair.
