Helen O'Hara | Empire Magazine | Fresh | 3/5 | 18 min ago | 2026-10-22 20:23:00 | If little of Taika Waititi’s film adaptation feels entirely original, there’s real charm in the quest of Jenna Ortega’s Klara to understand what makes humans tick, and where she belongs in the world.
Barry Hertz | Globe and Mail | Rotten | — | 26 min ago | 2026-10-22 20:15:00 | A dire endeavour that manages to bungle every element that made Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 novel so beautiful and provocative.
Frank Swietek | One Guy's Opinion | Rotten | D | 41 min ago | 2026-10-22 20:00:00 | Is just aching to come across as a touching, meaningful fable about the fragility of the human condition, but Waititi’s comic sensibility is at odds with the material, and the combination is ultimately both overly broad and cloying.
Kristy Puchko | Mashable | Rotten | — | 44 min ago | 2026-10-22 19:15:00 | Klara and the Sun is a story of faith with no soul.
Leo Brady | AMovieGuy.com | Rotten | 2/4 | 1 hr ago | 2026-10-22 18:59:00 | Klara and the Sun lacks the energy, emotional depth, and imaginative spark that could have made it shine.
William Bibbiani | TheWrap | Rotten | — | 2 hrs ago | 2026-10-22 17:59:00 | We only break out the expression 'emotionally manipulative' if the filmmaking is so clumsy that the manipulation doesn’t work.
Neil Pond | Neil's Entertainment Picks | Rotten | 2/5 | 21 min ago | 2026-10-22 12:57:00 | It’s sappy and soppy, full of peculiarity but coming up empty on most everything else. And its attempts at humor and comedy seem forced and fall flat.
Edward Douglas | The Weekend Warrior (Substack) | Rotten | 4.5/10 | 49 min ago | 2026-10-22 12:29:00 | Not even worth shrugging it off as a disaster, because to do that, you’d have to give it the benefit of the doubt that there was any potential for good in adapting this story in the first place.
Louisa Moore | Screen Zealots | Fresh | — | 4 hrs ago | 2026-10-22 09:18:00 | Waititi’s colorful visuals and offbeat humor won’t work for everyone, and the silliness occasionally clashes with the bleak subject matter. I liked the contrast, though, which gives the film a welcome sense of whimsy even in its darkest moments.
Jim Schembri | jimschembri.com | Rotten | 2/5 | 10 hrs ago | 2026-10-22 03:18:00 | Ah, what a letdown from director Taika Waititi… Regrettably, Klara and the Sun doesn’t add much to the over-serviced sub-genre of sci-fi films about humanoid androids.
Ryan Lattanzio | IndieWire | Rotten | D | 23 min ago | 2026-10-21 22:29:00 | For a movie filled with self-driving cars and powered by artificial intelligence, this “Klara” goes nowhere but straight into the sun of disaster, and without intelligence of any kind.
Richard Crouse | Richard Crouse | Rotten | 2/5 | 22 min ago | 2026-10-21 21:30:00 | Co-writer and director Taika Waititi turns the whimsey up to 11 in this adaptation of a based on 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.
Peter Gray | The AU Review | Rotten | 2.5/5 | 32 min ago | 2026-10-21 19:09:00 | Unfortunately, the film surrounding [Ortega] is too tonally confused, narratively uneven and emotionally rushed to fully honour either her performance or the extraordinary sadness of its source material.
Tara McNamara | Common Sense Media | Fresh | 3/5 | 32 min ago | 2026-10-21 19:09:00 | Sweet and warm, director Taika Waititi's robot dramedy feels a bit like drinking a cup of sunshine.
Lyvie Scott | Inverse | Rotten | — | 24 min ago | 2026-10-21 18:47:00 | What could have been the modern fairytale we needed is both too schmaltzy and too hollow, leaving us with an existential paradox that’s not worth the time it takes to solve.
Robert Kojder | Flickering Myth | Rotten | 2.5/5 | 31 min ago | 2026-10-21 18:09:00 | While watching Klara and the Sun, one recurring thought is why co-writer/director Taika Waititi felt his eccentric brand of comedy would add to an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s popular novel
Drew Bittner | Geek Girl Riot / RIOTUS | Fresh | A | 35 min ago | 2026-10-21 16:35:00 | Every year, some movies get lost in the shuffle. Don’t sleep on this one. A gem of a movie, it’s a meditation on belief, grief, and the power of love. Possibly Taika Waititi’s most emotional movie yet.
Anthony Morris | It's Better in the Dark | Rotten | 2.5/5 | 2026-10-21T16:25:07.000Z | 2026-10-21 16:25:07 | Having a determinedly upbeat robot try to solve a bunch of unresolved trauma and family conflict would be tricky for any director; it's fair to say that Waititi 's approach doesn't work here.
Jason Flatt | But Why Tho? | Fresh | 6.5/10 | 2026-10-21T15:54:13.000Z | 2026-10-21 15:54:13 | Klara and the Sun is certainly flawed, but where it charms, it charms hard, thanks to a standout performance from Jenna Ortega and some well-conceived, if not well-concluded themes.
Aaron Neuwirth | We Live Entertainment | Rotten | 4/10 | 2026-10-21T15:46:58.000Z | 2026-10-21 15:46:58 | The feature needed more work in the assembly stage before shipping.
Brian Eggert | Deep Focus Review | Rotten | 2/4 | 41 min ago | 2026-10-21 14:40:00 | Klara and the Sun tries way too hard to melt our hearts, and its persistence, somewhat fittingly, comes off as synthetic and hollow.
Mark Meszoros | The News-Herald (Willoughby, OH) | Fresh | 2.5/4 | 1 hr ago | 2026-10-21 13:23:00 | For the most part, Klara is an engaging and thoughtful film, set in a dystopian future where, following a third world war and the related banning of the internet, human-like androids are commonplace.
Katherine McLaughlin | SciFiNow | Rotten | 2/5 | 14 hrs ago | 2026-10-21 00:23:00 | Its message about love and “finding your own weirdo” in a time when loneliness can be considered a prevailing and modern illness is endearingly sweet but it’s delivered with very little delicacy and doesn’t manage to say anything particularly compelling.
Carla Hay | Culture Mix | Rotten | — | 15 hrs ago | 2026-10-20 23:23:00 | Klara and the Sun is a misfire with an identity crisis that's not just about the robot purchased to be a teenage girl's artificial friend. This cringeworthy sci-fi drama can't decide if it wants to be whimsical and cute or edgy and mean-spirited.
David Rooney | The Hollywood Reporter | Rotten | — | 15 hrs ago | 2026-10-20 23:23:00 | Led by a misused Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, Taika Waititi’s clanging dud has the distinction of being indisputably the worst screen adaptation of a novel by Nobel Prize laureate Kazuo Ishiguro.
Giovanni Lago | Next Best Picture | Rotten | 4/10 | 38 min ago | 2026-10-20 20:44:00 | Waititi somehow gets lost in Ishiguro’s simplistic messaging in a wannabe heartwarming tale that is exhausting to experience, especially toward its sobering conclusion, which abandons the manufactured liveness that came before.
Nick Schager | The Daily Beast | Rotten | — | 27 min ago | 2026-10-20 15:44:00 | A wannabe-inspiring fable that proves its maker’s preternatural gift for noxious sentimentality.
Danielle Solzman | Solzy at the Movies | Rotten | 1/5 | 32 min ago | 2026-10-20 15:39:00 | Klara and the Sun is a film that never quite comes together.
Allison Rose | FlickDirect | Fresh | 3.5/5 | 23 min ago | 2026-10-20 13:59:00 | Klara and the Sun offers terrific visuals and a wonderful performance from Jenna Ortega, but Taika Waititi's lighter approach may disappoint fans of the novel.
James Mottram | South China Morning Post | Fresh | 3/5 | 3 hrs ago | 2026-10-20 10:15:00 | Arriving just after Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Tom Cruise-led Digger offered a bleak look at a climate-altered world, this optimistic, fable-like portrait of the future at least provides a welcome ray of sunshine.
Mike Massie | Gone With The Twins | Rotten | 5/10 | 4 hrs ago | 2026-10-20 09:15:00 | Nothing about the setting is believable or sensible, which makes it difficult to become invested in the various predicaments.
David Robb | Slant Magazine | Rotten | 1.5/4 | 1 hr ago | 2026-10-17 14:07:00 | It’s a faithful adaptation that nevertheless strips away everything insightful and affecting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel.
Amelia Harvey | Nerdspin | Fresh | C- | 12 hrs ago | 2026-10-17 00:28:00 | Klara and the Sun is entirely watchable, thanks to a delightful central performance from Jenna Ortega, but it’s a hollow shadow of what it could be. A film to pass the time that ignores the hard stuff.
Dave Calhoun | Screen International | Fresh | — | 18 min ago | 2026-10-16 17:41:00 | Strong performances and imaginative visuals help to make it an engaging fairytale with a distinctive otherworldly tone -- but something is lost by widening the story beyond Klara’s tight perspective.
Clotilde Chinnici | Loud and Clear Reviews | Rotten | 3/5 | 2 hrs ago | 2026-10-16 15:59:00 | As an adaptation, it suffers from the lack of exploration of its central themes and a considerable struggle in its worldbuilding and set up.
Matt Rodgers | Flickering Myth | Fresh | 3/5 | 14 hrs ago | 2026-10-15 23:34:00 | Klara and the Sun is simply a lovely little fable of hope about what it means to be human, anchored by a delightful performance from Jenna Ortega that makes it just about worthy of your time.
David Jenkins | Little White Lies | Rotten | 1/5 | 23 min ago | 2026-10-15 20:38:00 | This potentially rich subject matter is squandered by Waititi who has a juvenile habit of undercutting any hint at profundity with a jolt of silly humour or a comic rug pull.
Clarisse Loughrey | Independent (UK) | Rotten | 2/5 | 39 min ago | 2026-10-15 20:22:00 | The book was about who we fundamentally are, now and tomorrow. The film is about the power of love and friendship. That seems like quite the downgrade.
Peter Bradshaw | Guardian | Rotten | 1/5 | 2026-10-15T20:20:39.000Z | 2026-10-15 20:20:39 | Taika Waititi detonates an explosion of postmodern quirkiness and ironic dorkiness in this unbearably mannered, unspeakably acted film.
Tim Robey | Daily Telegraph (UK) | Rotten | 1/5 | 2026-10-15T20:19:58.000Z | 2026-10-15 20:19:58 | Ishiguro’s thoughts on the ever-evolving relationship between technology and humanity are tossed away like so much thematic confetti. It’s hard to fathom what Waititi thought he was doing in playing things for laughs.
Kevin Maher | The Times (UK) | Rotten | 1/5 | 2026-10-15T20:18:58.000Z | 2026-10-15 20:18:58 | It’s a hopeless film, slippery and mendacious, full of gross Hallmark sentiment, and has been bettered by a myriad of previous robot companion flicks.
Damon Wise | Deadline Hollywood Daily | Rotten | — | 2026-10-15T20:18:01.000Z | 2026-10-15 20:18:01 | Klara And The Sun just doesn’t deliver on any of the fronts it promises. Instead, we’re faced with a sporadically funny meditation on life and premature death that... can’t quite capture the subtleties of speculative literary sci-fi.
Ben Gibbons | Screen Rant | Rotten | 5/10 | 2026-10-15T20:16:39.000Z | 2026-10-15 20:16:39 | I'm disappointed to say that Klara and the Sun fails to capture the beauty of a carefully constructed dystopian tale, instead offering up a ham-fisted sci-fi comedy with a hollow message.
