In Oregon in 1933, Samuel Murphy is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp. Warden Clancy tempts him with early release if he smuggles gold through deadly wilderness, but betrayal festers within the crew, and Murphy questions how far he'll go to see his child again.
The Weight turns a stripped-down tale of desperation into a gripping, hard-hitting thriller, elevated by Ethan Hawke's magnetic performance and Padraic McKinley's assured direction.

| 287803 | Jonathan Romney | Financial Times | Fresh | 3/5 | 2026-10-06T22:48:08.000Z | 2026-10-06 22:48:08 | This is the sort of lean actioner that Walter Hill or Robert Aldrich might have made in decades past, and Hawke and Crowe — birds of a feather, you might say — would have fitted into their world perfectly. |
| 287804 | Jake Wilson | Sydney Morning Herald | Fresh | 3/5 | 2026-10-06T20:43:29.000Z | 2026-10-06 20:43:29 | If you miss the days of no-nonsense westerns, Padraic McKinley’s first feature The Weight scratches that itch as well as anything in a while. |

| 285029 | Niall Browne | Movies in Focus | Fresh | 4/5 | 2026-10-02T17:47:29.000Z | 2026-10-02 17:47:29 | Simply put, Padraic McKinley’s The Weight is excellent. It’s a tense drama that’s old-fashioned but expertly built with captivating storytelling, good characters and strong performances. It also looks great – so see it on the big screen if you can! |

Now that is a movie! |
